Other Options to the AT&T Wireless Unlimited Data Connect Aircard Plan.

If you have been reading previous posts, you know that I have been locked in a bitter struggle with AT&T Wireless over the cancellation of their Unlimited Data Connect aircard plan which I have had in effect for almost 7 years.  I have the option of changing the contract to their current 5gb plan or canceling the plan entirely.

I posted this on one of the RV forums, hoping someone who had dealt with this problem already could give me some insight.  Much to my chagrin, most people took offense to the fact that I was using over 5gb a month… and not having to pay for the extra usage.  That caught me offguard but after thinking about it,  it makes perfect sense.  many people who post on the internet forums are quick to find fault and point fingers.  I got responses like “Why do you need so much bandwidth?”  Well, I don’t download movies or even streaming video.  I bet I have looked at youtube less than a dozen times over the years.  A slow EDGE network connection like I usually have does not really lend itself to downloading huge files.   I use it for my internet business mostly.  And the response to that was “Well, you need to get a small business account and quit using the personal account under false pretenses.”  Honestly, that is what they said.  The fact of the matter is, when I got this aircard and account in 2005 it was SO new, there was just ONE plan offered  –and I got it.  They didn’t even have a small business option.

Another suggestion I got was to just add another aircard for $60/month.  That would give me another 5gb of usage.  Hmmm, with 3 phones – 2 of which are iPhones and the aircard, my AT$T wireless bill is currently $230 per month.  Adding another aircard would push that bill to $300 a month…. easy.  So, AT&T Wireless bends me over and I add to my business with them and give them more money?  Ummmm… I don’t think so.

It was also suggested I get  satellite internet from Hughesnet or Starband.   At the time, I thought that was a ridiculous option.  No way I can afford the $5k-$7k to get one of those fancy automatic dishes installed on top of the Old Girl.  They do offer a portable dish option for less than $1k and monthly service is $90 bucks or less.  As far as I can tell, they do not impose monthly limits either….  They have daily download thresholds and if you exceed the limit, the slow you down to a crawl for the next 24 hours.  I could live with that.   Another consideration is the complete absence of a usable cell phone signal at our property in Terlingua.  I have been puzzling over how to solve that for the past few months as I anticipate spending more and more time out there.

I have posted previously that one of our most powerful ‘votes’ is how we spend our money.   None of the 3 phones I have with AT&T are under a current contract and they will ‘allow’ me to opt out of my aircard contract.  Maybe the best thing I can do is drop AT&T the first of the year when Verizon starts selling the iPhone.  I would mightily enjoy being done with AT&T.

I want with millenicom.com for 3g internet, $60/month for 10gb after the $165 startup, no contract. That’s on the verizon network, they also have another plan with more data on sprint.

I follow a Canadian part-time rv’er who is trying the new service from Virgin: they have a mini-hub for under $200 and unlimited service. Croft is here (http://croftsmexico.blogspot.com/) He’s headed down towards Brownsville I think.

They are renting bandwidth from Sprint though so it may not do much for you if you are out in the middle of nowhere!

    Good luck with the Sub!

Andy, I am happy with the verizon air card, it is 5g, as I can take it anywhere and use it as I go.
I have a old Huges satelite set up in the back yard (you can have if it still works I paid $800.00 for it)I had for rving.

(never did use it with motorhome only tore a screw lose on my rear steps carrying it around) and a dish still on the house roof.

It was about the same speed as my verizon air card, the verizon is nice.
