What Day Is It Again?

30 minutes from daylight at the Old Girl

It gets sorta like that after awhile.  What chronological order in the universe I was trying to maintain just gets all tossed up like a pile of white coat hangers in my brain.   It has been days since I crossed the cattle guard out into the real world.  People have died and gotten married and the sun still comes up every morning.  It is what it is.  Thank goodness Miss K is not a whine baby.

I get questions ……  “What is the job really like?” I guess the standard oil field gate guard answer is “Well, it is not for everybody.” That is what the old hands told me when I was doing my due diligence; but what exactly does that mean???   I distinctly remember the first day we pulled in here.  A few hours of moving the couple we were replacing out and the Old Girl in and then the other couple was gone; adios, hasta la vista baby.   Miss K looked at me and said “This job is cake.” Well, not exactly…….

Do this if you are thinking about trying on a gate guard job for size.   Pick out a large city in your area and look for the BIGGEST truck stop  –every big city will have one somewhere around the outer band of the Megalopolis.  For today’s  adventure,  you are going to drive to the truck stop and locate the truck entrance/exit .   Park your vehicle 5 feet from the entrance/exit and then go stand out in front of it.   Stand there and wave at every truck for the next 2 hours.   That’ll give you a taste.  To be near-authentic, the scenario would have to be ratcheted up a notch.    You would need one of those big Hollywood disaster movie wind fans and 2 guys.    Set the wind-O-meter on the fan at 35mph.  On cue, have the 2 guys throw 2 5lb  buckets of talc fine dust and sand into the fan.  Never stop waving.    That oughta complete today’s action adventure.   I told ya  — ‘This job ain’t for everybody.’ Better make sure that partner doesn’t mind a little grit in her panty crack as well.  That will turn a good woman absolute bad in a heartbeat.

Take my cynicism with a grain of salt folks.  From reading the other oilfield gate guard blogs,  our current assignment is atypical.  Most assignments consist of one or two drilling locations.  We have 22 locations at this one gate… and they are building more pads.  That means we have scads of traffic.   There is not an hour of the day that some traffic does not pass 10′ in front of the Old Girl.  The gate never closes.  A typical assignment may last from a few days to a few weeks.  We have been here 10 weeks with no end in sight.

Maybe this post just reflects how tired I am at this point.  Did somebody say this job was ‘cake’?  I haven’t heard that one since that first time it was uttered.  Yesterday was a tough day and this morning I feel like somebody whipped on me with a sock of nickles.  So yesterday I am sitting here just before daylight and the interminable procession of  mud trucks, oil trucks and crew trucks are winding there way in and out of the gate and the water truck shows up.  The water truck that waters the road shows up  — and that is odd.  See, we do not request them to water our road for us.  Just not worth it for the time and trouble.  They have to come in from the backside of the lease and water the road and if it is hot and dry (why else would there be dust on the road????) and the effects only last about 30 minutes before it is dry and dusty again.   So we don’t whine for road water–ever.   For the water truck to show up and water the coupla hundred yards of road on either side of the Old Girl meant somebody felt sorry for us and we were in for a beating.    Took me about 5 minutes to put two and two together  –they are building a new drilling pad and that means they need rock.  Today was rock truck day.

A fine coating of dust on everything....

In addition to our normal traffic on Friday, we had 200 truck loads of rock come through the gate in a 10 hour stretch.   The boys building the pad did their damndest to keep the road watered down but it was a losing battle from the get go.  There is no way to get ahead of the dust when you have 40 big trucks an hour coming and going and the wind is blowing at a steady 15-20mph.  By the end of the day I had a bad case of that panty grit and the whipped nickle thing happening in spades.  Tuco the Dog had retreated under the Old Girl.  She lays just underneath and just behind the rear axle of the RV when she is having a bad day.

But hey!;  today is another day in Texas and the alternative to waking up and facing the sunrise is not something worth even considering.   The crew building the pad was in before daylight and my first question to them was “Are ya’ll done with the rock trucks?”  Yeah buddy!  Good to go today!  I preach at my kids sometimes (fancy that!) and I tell ’em ‘everbody gotta be doin’ something’.   Miss K and I are more fortunate than most; I really feel that is so.   Life is good and if it wasn’t we would just pack up the Old Girl and be on our way.  Miss K would tell ya ‘Been there. Done that.  Got the T shirt.’

End Note: Saturday in the Park by Chicago from the 1972 cd Chicago V.  Yeah, it is just about like that.

  • Andy, what a clever and perfect description of the life! I’m floored by the 22 locations! That’s crazy! I hope they pay you x22! How does Miss K keep that much fudge going?
