My Dancecard is Full - Thanks for Asking

12 weeks we have been sitting here.  12 weeks just west of Gainesville, TX doing the oil field gate guard thing. 12 weeks of me and Tuco the Dog trying to find enough things to do in order to fill interminable hours of do-nothing.  Now, suddenly, there do not seem to be enough hours in the day.

We have asked for 10 days off starting next week.  Our replacements will be here late on Sunday the 15th and after a few hours of tutelage, we are going to try and get out of here AM on the 16th.  I talked to the new folks on the phone and they seem nice enough.  This will be their first gate guard  assignment and  they should do just fine.  After all, it is not rocket science.   I am going to pull the Old Girl to the back side of this huge pad and leave her and the Desert Tan Baby here for this adventure.

So, the sane and safe plan for 10 days off would be some overdue R&R right?   A spa day for Miss K,  a trip to the doggie boutique for Tuco the Dog, a nice B&B down in the Hill Country for a few days; sounds good, huh?  Well, it ain’t happening.  We got kid stuff that needs doing.  Even though the  mine and her’s kids are mostly grown, they still need the parental units.

Uhhhh, can you say–  ROADTRIP!

4Runner snugged up against the Mothership

Miss K’s son stayed in Idaho after the mashup and finished HS.  He is just finishing his first year at college in Idaho and will be employed this summer as a river guide at the Grand Canyon.  Good kid to say the least.  Never whines, never complains and stays outta trouble.  Lot to be said for that in this day and time.  Living simply like we do has its’ advantages.   Pretty much everything we own would fit inside a 2 car garage.   We have enough — that is the key.  Someway or another Miss K managed to gather up enough hard dollars to buy her boy a car.   A 1998 Toyota 4Runner; not a new car, not a fancy car but hopefully one that will see him through college.  This past week has been spent getting it repainted —  more than a decade of harsh Texas sun had bleached the paint on the hood and roof.  It also needed some minor mechanical work and new tires.  All of that is done and it is sitting next to the Old Girl right now.  Mark one set of chores off the list.

The BEVO car

As readers know my daughter, Cait, and her family are military and have been overseas for way too many years.   In January they returned to the States and are stationed now in Tucson,  AZ.   I last saw them in September of last year so a trip to see them is overdue.  I have another reason to go see them as well.  Back in the day, the kids and I put together a 1987 IROC Camaro.  That is the year Cait was born so she decided she had to have the car affectionately known as BEVO.    BEVO has been living in a storage unit in South Dallas for 6 years but that is going to change this Saturday.

I am going to pick up a U Haul car carrier Saturday morning and go get BEVO out of the cave.  We will return back up here to make the final preparations for our trip.

So here is the ambitious logistics plan.  I am going to trailer the BEVO car to Tucson behind the Suburban,  Miss K is going to drive the 4Runner.  Miss K’s son is flying into Tucson on Thursday and will spend a few days with us before beginning his summer employment.   When he leaves Tucson he will have a set of car keys in his pocket for the first time in his life.  Cait will be reunited with her BEVO car and I will get to spend some good time with her and her husband  — and my grandson Hank the Tank.  We plan on eating out,  cooking in,  playing with small children, shooting guns in the desert, drinking cold beers and spending hours catching up with family that has been apart too long.

Sounds like you are going to see lots of Texas but it all sounds worth it. Hope the Camaro isn’t all flat tires and mouse nests. Having a 4Runner in Idaho sounds fabulous. I’d be happier than anything; hope he is as well. Try having a good time too; if there is any time left! Drive safely.

      Don,
I had the option of dropping down to Ft Worth and running I20/I10 out the whole way and decided not. We are going to run straight outta here to Lubbock on the skinny roads and then into NM. We will finally hit I10 at Las Cruces.

  • I was in a head-on crash with a drunk driver when I was 19. It earned me a brand new 1978 Firebird! I loved that car! I get it! You two have a wonderful time. Safe travels! Texas won’t be quite the same without you. 🙂
