Cacophony of Babel

Seems like just mebbe I hit a discordant note with my roll your own cigarette post.
( shrugs )

Some damning emails, negative popularity votes, and rss feed un-subscriptions speak volumes.

2.5 years into writing this blog, I have certain notions about what belongs here and doesn’t. When I first started writing, I did not even tell family or friends that I was doing a blog simply because I never wanted to write a post that I had to censor because of content. I wanted to write what was on my mind with no thoughts of winning any popularity contests or playing to the masses and feeding them what they wanted to hear. I have no qualms about anything contained in any of the 349 posts in the blog. 2 things I have never done– I have never made a post and later removed it or retracted it. I have never done a pity party post i.e. ‘Sometimes I wonder if anyone is reading this or even cares. Sometimes I wonder why I even post every day. Maybe I will just quit….lalalala’ At which point all the readers come out of the woodwork and say ‘ Oh PLEASE don’t quit! I read you every day…blablablabla. With egos stroked, everyone goes on their merry way.

So am I pissed I lost some readership? Nope

Am I indignant? Nope

Am I taking a shot at those who were offended and telling them not to let the door hit ’em in the ass on the way out? Nope

Am I being intentionally arrogant? I hope not

So what is it exactly I want to convey? Simply this, a strong blog has its’ own voice. I have yet to meet a single human being who was boring and did not have an interesting life. Not one. You can go to McDonald’s in Hermiston, Oregon or San Angelo, Texas and the Big Mac is going to be the same. I love me a Big Mac but I can’t eat it every day. A good blog, I mean a real damned good blog, should be like a fine, aged wine. Every time you crank that cork out and take a sip, it should be a unique human experience.

I have a few daily reads that I admire. Oft times, their post of the moment comes up in my mind repeatedly in the ensuing days because it touched something within me. Of course, that is the mark of a great writer and an example of the true power of the written word. Every once in awhile I think I get close-at least in the ball park. When that (almost) happens, I know it. Good writers write because what is inside has to come out. The catharsis is exclusive of the entourage.

It is what it is.

I finally found out how to leave a comment so here it comes:

It isnt that I agree with all of the things you write I happen to agree with most of them. But the reason your blog (and Mrs Ks)is on my reading list is you arnt afraid to tell it how it is and arnt hiding anything because it might possibly offend. It seems that you have a I drink I smoke I own guns and I THINK attitude that seems to get along with my own. Keep up the good work.

Your posts about the cigarette Stuffing machine mad me go out and try one and Now I not only have my pipes and cigars but now cigarettes made with my favorite pipe tobacco. Very enjoyable by the way.

I keep filing away all the useful bits of your RV Experience for when I finally get started on my getaway cargo conversion trailer.

Keep it up and Hope to see more about your Terlingua project.

      Thanks Warren,
Miss K and I were discussing the current state of affairs yesterday and how the general condition of “things” has deteriorated in the past 12 months. We came to the conclusion that most of our efforts –outside of gate guarding itself-were pretty much directed toward furthering the Terlingua Project.

It just takes so much to get something going from scratch in such an inhospitable and remote location.

  • I can’t believe you lost readership because of smokes. Strange.

When I choose to read a blog, I usually start at the beginning. This way I find out the mind set of the person writing it, I then decide whether I can live with their mind set and that then helps me make my decision if to follow that blog or not.

LOL…I will follow you until you stop writing, but I might have to read you just once a month due to spending unintended money after reading your posts. By the way…love the Broan heater…and I’m waiting on tubes. 🙂

Keep up your awesome, informative posts!!!

  • Dammittalltohell, I’ve been blogging for nigh on 10 years, and I’ve never gotten a “I say, Good Day, sir!” I wonder who they think they’re hurting.

Oh, well…as my sainted mother says, “Some people will bitch if you tie ’em with a new rope.”

    Good Day, Sir!

People are quitting your blog because you smoke? Jeez, talk about dumb! Now if you were beating your dog I could see it but smoking? Hell, I was going to send my stepson a link to that post so he’d have an idea how to save about $50 a week.

I don’t always agree with what you have to say but I enjoy reading it anyway. Isn’t that what our country is all about – different folks enjoying their different strokes. Keep up the good work!

    “negative popularity votes”

Hmm. I don’t know about the emails, but I looked at the post and I see only three votes, and two were positive. So I’d say “negative popularity *vote*”.

Anyway, I think smoking is stupid, and quitting would improve your health and your pocketbook, but I don’t read blogs because of the personal habits of the writers. Although I’d probably stop reading if you were beating your dog. Are you?
