Bad Men Least Expected

Local hangout. La Kiva Bar - Terlingua,Tx

Miss Kathy and I do our best to stay up to speed with the local news. Nothing gives you a better idea of what is going on in the local area.  We still joke about the truly bad weatherman we saw on late night San Angelo TV.  He would have been much more comfortable on a John Deere plowing a field of redtop cane than he was in front of that green screen muddling through the local weather.

I was chagrined last week to learn Brewster and Terrel Counties were not the fairy land I had built them up to be in my mind.  Such is the way of the world I guess.

I had come to believe in my mind that perhaps the Border situation was not quite as bad as it appeared to be in the more populated and less rugged areas.   We have vested interest in the area with the Terlingua Refuge  plan starting to come together.   Local news at the end of last week was reporting they had broken up a local drug ring in Alpine, TX.   I knew there was cross border traffic down thataway.  I think no mile of US Border with Mexico is free of that to a degree.  I had just always heard it was much less in this rugged area of Big Bend.   Maybe I need to rethink,  it seems evil resides wherever you might find yourself.

Sanderson, TX

The gist of it all is part of the drug ring folks lived in Alpine and part of ’em in Sanderson.  I would suspicion the cocaine was coming across right there in the Sanderson area close.  That is sparse country out there abouts… even less populated than South County.  The drug ring was selling it at two local school areas , a local park and maybe even in an RV park. The Sheriff commented that the drug ring was especially hard to investigate because everyone knew everyone else;  he had gone to High School with many of the defendants that were charged.   Disturbing as well was the amount of cocaine being distributed. Undercover investigators saw the ring sell half a kilo in one afternoon adjacent to a local Middle School.

Almost smacks of the Big City doesn’t it?  Sanderson, Population 744, is at least 70 miles from a town of any appreciable size.  Alpine, Population 6500,  is one of the larger towns in the area but is still a small(er) town when you look at the Big Picture.   I could almost understand drug mules traversing the area, moving product to the more populated areas of the North.   Attempting to distribute in a small town where everyone makes it a point to know everyone else’s business seems pretty danged stupid.

One of the things I have always heard about the area is you don’t rely on a 911 call when the closest law enforcement or EMS care is an hour away.  Seems to me everyone is used to looking after themselves and taking care of business in a way more akin to the Frontier than the streets of Dallas.  I hope that is so and my idea that goodness abides in this area is well found.

Oh, Andy, I always wondered when you would come to the realization that West Texas was not exactly utopia. Having been born and raised in that part of the country, I have always known better. Also having grown up poor oilfield, trailer trash, I have been up close and personal with drug dealers, illegal gamblers, and prostitutes. I had a mis-spent youth which included but was not limited to smuggling hay bail sized bundles of a green herb across the border from BBNP in a motor home with bandito’s in hot pursuit on the back side and TADC bearing down on the front side. I escaped in a ’68 Mustang with only my wits and a little fast driving, not so much for the motor home which containded my oldest nephew who I had entered into this venture with. Long, long story. Sometime when you woud romatize West Texas, I would just get real quiet. I know you think every local yokel, in the Pack N Sack that grins at you a chats you up is trying to be your friend but that just ain’t so, they also want to know who you are and what the hell you are doin in their town.

The worst part of that friendly West Texas manner is it makes you think you have friends in places you don’t really have. Now that IS NOT to say there are not really friendly , good natured people who are wholesome at the core. There are! They really are! But for every 3 there is one you don’t want to know. They are just as sincere about cutting your throat if you get in between them and their money as they are about helping you change the flat tire on on your truck on a long deserted stretch of highway and they appear to be the same people. It really isn’t romantic, people are people the world over. Dallas, Iraan, Alpine .

  • I know more than I will ever share about how to deal with ‘Unsavory’ and nefarious characters.
Andy need not worry too much…
