Freedom Is Not Free

I know I confused some of y’all this morning. If you have an RSS feed you got a post that differs from this one. Well, I changed my mind due to some late breaking info. You will get that same-same post again in a few days.

In the meantime, this post needs to made TODAY. Some of you will be heading out camping or boating or firing up the grill or drinkin’ some cold beers with the boys. If this post brings you up short and makes you THINK about just what WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON besides your agenda then by God it has served its’ purpose.

My girl Cait is away from her family on this holiday. She is serving a six month rotation with Mortuary Affairs at Dover Air Force Base. Her job is to document on film the return of our Fallen Heroes. I hope the picture is sobering, provoking, compelling and brings a choking lump to the back of your throat.

Cait sent this short note along with the picture………

All:

Attached is a photo that the Dover photographer took of me on Saturday at our DT. This was before the DT actually started. Our AFMAO team moves the transfer case to the front of the aircraft before the movement begins, and we always stop what we’re doing to render honors. I was in the middle of setting up my camera when they called PRESENT ARMS– and Roland captured this shot.

Love you guys.

(UNRELEASED) Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Public Affairs personnel in action June 30, 2012 at Dover Air Force Base, Del. (U.S. Air Force photo/Roland Balik)

When I see my daughter and think about what is going on in this picture….. Out of the frame there is a flag draped transfer case and a family waiting to receive their Fallen Warrior.

I got nothing left folks. Nothing.

5 Stars on this one. I can see why you changed the post. Love the picture! It says so much. It’s one of the best I’ve seen in a long time (except the picture of my grandson in uniform!). The picture says a lot. You have every right to be a proud, proud dad.

That young woman has a hell of a job. It’s got to be tough watching other members of the armed forces come back like that. Damn!

You, and she, spoke a few days ago about the media ignoring this all. I look at my local tv news and they are too busy promoting the networks shows to actually cover news. To expect them to discuss a situation with honesty and integrity, any situation, would be like expecting my cat to do math. We don’t have news programs in this country; just talking heads.

I know this is an old post but…Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I’m giving thanks to those men and women, and their families, that are making tomorrow possible for us at home.

You guys and gals in our military, stay safe, and from the bottom of my heart, “thank you”.
