Cat Crap in the Sandbox

Got a little note in the mail along with our paycheck last week. It was a non disclosure agreement which prohibits communicating anything about the job of being an oil field gate guard verbally, in writing, in chat rooms, on the internet, via email or any other social media.  3 pages it was but in a nutshell that’s what it amounts to.

Miss Kathy and I dated it, signed it and returned it yesterday.

  • I expect about 1000 folks will read this POST today.  That is about normal traffic.  About 1/3 of those visitors used Google search for ‘oilfield gate guards’  and they ended up here.
  • The 19 emails in my INBOX all inquiring about various aspects of employment from prospective gate guards will go unanswered.
  • The 100 or so emails I anticipate I will receive for the remainder of the week on the same subject  of oilfield gate guard jobs will go unanswered.
  • I frequent 4 major RV internet forums and routinely answer questions regarding oil field gate guarding jobs on those forums.  We are no longer permitted to do that so the answers to their employment questions will be responded to by the naysayers who THINK it is MOST LIKELY a HORRIBLE JOB  –even though they have never been an oil field gate guard in Texas or anywhere else.
  • Miss K and I have nurtured a fairly active oilfield gate guard forum at our own expense and even provided venues for any gate guard company representative that desired one at our own expense.  It has proven to be a source of positive information,  provided social interaction for those oil field gate guards stuck way out in the boonies and a virtual handbook for the newbie gate guard who is clueless.  I guess that will go away.

There are still a few areas I am mulling over as to whether or not certain actions are allowed:

  • Are the Men’s and Ladie’s Luncheons now in violation of the NDA because someone might overhear your conversation?
  • On that note, can you even talk to another gate guard to begin with?
  • Can I still call the Border Patrol when I see illegal activity?
  • If the Border Patrol pulls through the gate as they did yesterday and ask for specific location information,  can I divulge that?
  • If I can’t talk to the Border Patrol, do I feel safe?
  • Do I continue to give directions to the dozen or so people who stop here night and day, hopelessly lost?

NO PICTURES ALLOWED!!!!!! - An full color professional artist's rendering of me at work.

Every oilfield gate guard I know arrived at their first gate by a different path.  Quite a few called the gate guard offices via the contact info found here and were told to ‘Come on down!  We will have a place for you!.  A little far fetched if you are in California or Massachusetts with no other info available, don’t you think?

The common thread we all share when we first thought to be oil field gate guards was researching it on the internet.  Period. Everyone of us.   That information came from internet forums, reading daily blogs and personal emails if you were lucky enough to find a personal mentor willing to take the time to answer 100 questions.

You know, if I had a nickle for every time a new gate guard said  ‘ I am in the business NOW because of your blog or your forum or all those messages you sent me about being an oil field gate guard………’    Just a nickle, mind you…………

Oh well, guess we better be leaving all this gate guard promotional/informational/social media interaction to those internet commandos who tend to be all hat and no cows.

So as of today, no more oil field gate guard blog posts of any shape or kind.  I was blogging long before I was guarding so no big deal there.

The oil field gate guard forum will be closed down a week from today.   I can’t leave it active since I am responsible for all content contained there in and  I am sure the members over there are frettin’ some of the posts they made in the past so it will all go away Wednesday 8/15/2012.  FWIW,  The Forum attracted about three thousand visitors per day seeking information.

That gives y’all time to:

  • Contact any of your forum friends to  obtain other means to contact them.
  • Collect any information such as RV repairmen in the areas, amenities available in the local towns, who will receive packages for you etc etc
  • We will be losing our access to our resident CPA who was such a great help to those of us who had never been self employed.  Dang, I hate that!

Finally, my oil field hiring and contact info page that contained all the up to date phone numbers for most of the oil field gate guard companies is history as of today.  It was visited 89,317 times in the last 12 months.

  • I can’t figure out a business goal for such a clampdown…it’s not like yall are double-naught spies. Well, Agent Andy, I shall continue to read, despite the implicit threat that I might learn something I SHOULD NOT KNOW!

Wonder if there will be a shortage of Gate Guards in the future….

Most now don’t seem desperate for the work.

This sucks. While I have no interest in gg’ing, it has always been obvious to me that you’ve been providing a valuable public service. This sort of volunteerism is part of what made this country great.

Joel, another thought along those lines. It is impossible for something simple and efficient to remain the same. It will always evolve into a more complicated state with layers of bureaucracy and ream after ream of rules.

So they ask you to shut down the source (sounds like THE source) of information for employment as gate guards. So how, pray tell, will people find out about this opportunity in the future? Carrier pigeons? LOL Maybe printed on the back of their gas receipt? LOL

Thanks for all you guys have done, i have enjoyed reading the posts!

    Hey Andy,

Having just stumbled across your blog a few weeks ago, I’ve been totally immersed in all the available info on gate guarding. To see it all just poof away seems completely unfair. Wouldn’t all the info posted prior to the date you and Miss K signed the NDA be considered “safe?” Couldn’t you just close the forum to new posts as of the date you signed? That way all your previous work, info, and that of your forum members would be safe for all the prospective gate guards out there…

    Hi Andy,

Very sorry to hear than news. Do you think there was one thing in particular that caught their attention? Were you guys singled out or did everybody get a non disclosure agreement to sign?

Guess you can’t answer the questions….

  • Andy,

Been following your blog for a couple of years now and really enjoyed your GG based writing. Gonna’ miss those posts, some of the topics you wrote about were absolutely brilliant.

Certainly short sighted of your company to put out a gag order, you’ve done so much to promote a good working opportunity for interested folks.

I’m sure you’ll be finding some other interesting aspect of life working from your RV to blog about. I look forward to that.

Thanks for all your and Miss K’s fine work with the forum, it will be missed.

    Best Regards!

Andy, what a rip!! You have always been judicious in your information that you posted. Others not so much. In the past, I commented on the forum that a little of the information should be assumed “tight hole” (just a little oil field humor there), but it seems now it is going tight world. I can go to Rig Zone and find most of the info I need or want.
In another light, don’t you think that some of GGS’s problems arise from the few jokers that file suit over any and everything. YOu know, the ones that don’t like payscale/workng conditons/service equipment/location/dust/heat/etc? I never cease to be amazed at the ones that threaten to sue because their panties are in a wad.
In my limited association with GGS, they did exactly what they said they would and were good to work with. Shame some people ruined a good thing because there nose got bent.

That little Terlingua reprise is looking better and better everyday, huh? Dude, is it just me or are we really living in Orwell’s 1984? Basically its like you said, if it’s simple there is always a way to make it hard. Thing that gets me about this whole shootin match is that it seems as though the industry is shooting itself in the foot by shutting down sites like the forums page. And all this comes at a time when there are not enough people to fill all the slots that need to be filled?????? Go figure. Yep, give me a few more months to get together the last of my necessities and color me and mine gone.
