We Live in Interesting Times

It has been an interesting 2 weeks since I posted detailed info about the Easter Storm.  Of course, reading that blog entry, you will soon realize a good part of it – down toward the end anyway – consists of a bleg.   A begging blog.   I asked for some help.

The Gadsden Flag--Soiled and dirty after the Easter Storm blowed it down in the caliche mud

The Gadsden Flag–Soiled and dirty after the Easter Storm blowed it down in the caliche mud

My anticipation when I asked for PayPal donations was that some folks were going to think it was worth a few bucks and hit the DONATE button;  and them that weren’t having such a good day would just move along.   After all,  I wasn’t siphoning gas out of their cars or letting my dog shit in their flower bed, right?

Nah, not so fast there Naive Pilgrim. How about some o’ this to start your day?

“This begging is disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

or maybe “Andy, put on your big boy pants and buck up like the rest of us do. I, like many others, have had many pitfalls in life and we don’t go asking for handouts … If it was offered, fine! You are begging and it is very disturbing. Obviously it’s more than just me that think you have stooped to a new low … GOODBYE!”  I scratched my head on this one a little bit because the last time I checked I was making the same amount of money as any other gate guard that works for this company.

The cracker jack of all the detractors came in the form of longish email which managed to tie Miss Kathy’s departure, the Easter Storm and my slovenly habits all into one big steaming, stinking pile of deception and lies that would have made Shakespeare proud. The major points of his rant:

  •  I was getting the reputation of an Internet Scammer because of this. Google it up if I didn’t believe him.  ( I didn’t bother)
  • I shouldn’t be asking folks that “are living on Social Security and scraping to get by to send me money thru paypal so you can do whatever while you decide what your not going to do and knowing you need to do something that your as of now, never going to do because your to drunk,or to lazy or to lonely or all the above.”
  • Miss Kathy is most likely bi-polar and that makes her a dangerous woman and besides I  “found her at a nudist camp,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,duh,,,does that not tell you anything Andy.”
  • And the closing point “At this point as much as I would like to help you Andy,I have the feeling you married trouble”

Sometimes I guess I am just not meant to “get it”.  In past instances where I contributed to someone who was going through some tough times, I never questioned the whys or wherefors.  Don’t that sorta get in the way of being charitable?  Hmmph!  Maybe I am better off not knowing what is going on in these folks’ minds that compels them to react in such fashion.

For those folks who care to know, the donations were more generous by half again as much as I expected.  There is a little over $2500 resting in a savings account earmarked as the RV Purchase Fund.  That money represents every nickle that was contributed via the DONATE button -every nickle.  Donations ranged from $10 to $200 and many of them included heart warming and positive notes.  I damned sure appreciate every dollar that was sent our way!  Each and every contributor should have received an email thank you from me.  I guess several folks assumed the DONATE button would open a floodgate of Federal Reserve Notes headed my way and I would have many thousands of Ben Franklins to throw around;  making the purchase of a new and fancy RV a piece of cake.  Well, you see it didn’t quite happen that way.  $2500 is a damned good chunk of change in my book and it will be put to the use the contributors intended when they sent it.

GEICO did NOT total the Suburban for which I am thankful.  Damages amounted to $4329 (after the deductible) and I replaced the glass for $650.  Instead of getting the banged up ol’ bitch fixed I am going to drive it as-is and throw that GEICO check into the RV Purchase Fund.

Miss Kathy is back…… and I am damned glad for that.  The details are really nobody’s damned business.   You can love somebody completely and still not like them very much at times. Sometimes you have to  leave so you can come back.  The news of her return has caused concern among family and friends alike.  Between the two of us, we have raised 3 kids to adulthood that we are extremely proud of.  They turned out good!   We have a small, very dear circle of additional family and friends that means the world to us. But our duty to family and friends is mostly discharged at this point.   We both sacrificed and did what we had to do for years to reach this point in our lives and what Miss K and I do with our lives NOW is up to US.  We aren’t going rob banks or anything else that requires a ski mask,  sign up for food stamps,  become expatriates or ever work in a cubicle again.

Life is about the living, folks.  Living life is never easy; it was never meant to be.  I read a poll that the folks at AARP did with their members recently. You know what the two biggest regrets were?  The respondents said they felt they had worked too hard and they had neglected family and friends along the way.  Think of the lives cut short as a result of the Boston Bombing and the West Explosion recently.  How many lives were shattered and dreams lost in the blink of an eye?  All those folks got up the morning of their last day on this Earth and walked out the door to face what the future held for them.  I am not going to waste one single day of those remaining to me.  I do not want to sit back at the end of any day, and upon reflection,  think I did not live that day well.

The PayPal DONATE button will disappear from MyOldRV on 4/20/2013.  My original intention was for it to be a temporary thing and I think 2 weeks is a good run.  Once again, thanks to all of you that contributed because you had a heart felt desire to do so.  It reinforces my belief that the American Spirit is still very much alive and well.

Take care my friends!

Awesome post! Trolls will do what they do and their need to spread the dissatisfaction they find in their own lives continues to baffle me. Glad to hear that things are turning that corner for you..

  • I started reading your blog two years ago when we considered gate guarding. . .I have gotten more knowledge and value from your posts about RV’ing than any donation I could ever make. . .

Continue to do what you do and let the rest go. . .kudos to you and your love for picking up the pieces and moving forward!

  • Thank you Andy. The results you got thru PayPal warm my heart. Bryan (above) is right about the trolls out there… the complainers sound like sad jealous people. Best wishes for continued success.

  • Thank you Andy for your encouraging words over the years about gate guarding. The sad fact is there are negative people out there and their only jollies are to spew their vitriol. I wish I could have given you something, but I am barely rubbing two nickles together. I am so happy to hear that you and Miss Kathy are back together. Sometimes you just need to step away, clear your head and then have another go at it. Everyone needs a break now and then. I wish you two much success and hope you find something to live in soon. Hugs to you both!

There was nothing wrong about asking your community for help! You have provided free information on your blog for years. You gave people a chance to help you in return.
Can’t help but agree with Bryan about the trolls. Will never understand people who are negative to someone having a hard time.
Glad that things are better and may they continue to improve.

Quote: “Miss Kathy is most likely bi-polar and that makes her a dangerous woman and besides I “found her at a nudist camp,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,duh,,,does that not tell you anything Andy.””

    I am NOT bi-polar!
My mother lives at a Naturist Park. NOT ME. I was simply visiting her for some
Well deserved time off. and besides, what is YOUR problem with nudists or bi-polar persons?
What I do with my life has no effect on you Sir!

I will not let anyone disparage me, either online or in person.
So put up or Shut up!

    • Miss Kathy,

People today seem to be hell bent on spreading their misery to as many as they can, it’s like a goal for them. I walk past thousands of them in Chicago each way while going to and from Union Station, miserable people who want everybody else the same way.

I hope the replacement rig works out for you guys, I know the transition is tough and tell the old salty hubby to give you a hug. 🙂

      Miss Kathy,
I happen to like nude bi-polar women. Matter of fact I love em. Never a dull moment and loads of fun as long as you know how to play what you are doing. Which I don’t. But you gotta give me credit for trying. And I am not saying that you are either. You are Miss Kathy. Nothing more. Nothing less. That’s all I expect and more than I or anyone else deserve. You and Andy are great friends to all of us and an inspiration to me and Miss Stinky! So feed em a fish head girl! And if there is anything left after you open the can o Whoop Ass on em send the leftover’s my way. I need a target to vent my frustrations on. And to all the naysayers and detractors and general jackwagons I say, get a life and be human or do us all a favor and stand on the tracks and wait for the train!!! If I knew how to wave the Hawaiian good luck sign at all the morons who disparaged my Andy and Miss Kathy, in writing, I’d surely wave it today!

Screw him Ms. Kathy! Some people have nothing better to do with their lives. You two are an inspiration to buck the norm! This blog is responsible for opening a door for us to an opportunity ( not just GG ) that we never even realized was right under our noses. It’s also created a community where others understand our need for a less stationery lifestyle, not necessarily fitting the status quo. Thank you & keep em coming!

Great replies from all the above! We know how generous y’all have been to all of us. We can’t repay the knowledge & friendship always given. Never have you skidded around a direct question, & I’ve asked questions of others & suddenly the networking stopped, but not with you friend. Always think of you as a straight shooter. Everyone doesn’t have to agree with any & all things any of us say & do. I like to know where a body stands. So very glad you both are giving each other another try. This working non stop is for the birds…y’all got to smell the roses together some of the time. Thanks again for all you’ve done for us!

  • It blows my mind people are so mean and hurtful. Most likely they are unhappy with their lives and would like everyone to be as miserable as they are. When I your post about asking for donations, not once did I think any ill thoughts. My only thought was I wish I could help more. I wish you luck with finding or rebuilding your RV.

I only wish Katie and I could have done more. I have read your blog religiously for more than a year and the knowledge gained is worth many times more than what I could afford to send. I learned how to get cell service, internet, safe water and so many more things than I can list here. I didn’t have to do all the associated research and go through the inevitable, and costly, trial and error process on each and every subject. I simply came to your website and learned what to do. May God bless You and Kathy. And to the detractors, I can only have pity on your pathetic, snarky little lives.

Going to be a used bumper pull. 30′ or more with at least one slide out. Budget is $12k or less. I do not want to go into debt during these tough times.

You are right Stuart. The slide out can be a weak part of the roof structure and especially susceptible to UV, leaks and dust intrusion. However, living with a partner and a large dog 24/7 absolutely necessitate the extra room.
