I Need a Drink!

The Office. Helluva commute, huh?

The Office. Helluva commute, huh?

More than once I have wondered how my blog posts are received by you readers.  Sometimes I get mighty preachy. Other times I might spin up some wild tale that most folks might find just marginally believable.  I tell fantastic tales about where we are hanging out; the weather, the critters, the dust and heat and the colorful folks, and I just wonder if it even sounds slightly credible.   On the one hand, I want you to pay attention ’cause I really am trying to be helpful and on the other hand,  well,  I am not your Dad, OK?

This email showed up this week.  The writer is one of my regular readers but he doesn’t talk much,  It is with some reluctance he allowed me to post it.  I can understand because I value my privacy as well.

Andy,

Just dropping a line to give you an update.  I read your blog awhile back about the importance of Hydration but it was too late for me. I got sick as hell about three weeks ago workin the gate north of Abcxyz.  I started having kidney stone problems and knew that I was not getting enough water and started tryin to catch up. Of course by that time, I had an infection in my kidneys and started passing stones like a gravel trailer.  I passed about 12 over a week or so and just kept getting sicker and started running a low grade fever so I headed to the urgent doc in The Big City. The doc said that I was dehydrated bad and slapped two liters of IV on me just to get me back goin and wrote me a scrip for antibiotic. I went back to the gate and kept trying to drink water. I just got worse. We had fracking starting on Wednesday morning on 6 wells and I knew my bride could not work the gate by herself 24/7 so we called for a replacement and headed back to toward home. I could not even drive I was hurting so bad and a buddy came and towed my rig home. To make a long story short, within a day of getting home, I was on the operating table. Seems my gallbladder decided to rebel as well as a kidney so they yanked it. If I had only stayed hydrated properly, I would not had a problem. Lesson Learned. Looks like we will be back on a gate by the 15th or so of July and I am doin good but you can bet I will keep of glass of water in my hand most of the day. I thought that I would be good after a week of the laproscopic surgery but hell as you get older it takes longer to heal from stuff.

Keep  up the good advice on your blog, may save someone some real trouble.

Those of you down here in South Texas right now know where this guy is coming from.  We just went through a week of 100+ temps and I guess Saturday shattered all the heat records from Del Rio to Corpus.  This heat is serious business and it can kill ya.  I drink 4 liters of water EVERY day.  Even on Do Nothing Sundays (no piddling allowed!) I drink the 4 liters.  If I am really getting hot and sweaty I will drink even more but the minimum is 4 liters. Every evening I make sure the bottles are re-filled and in the ‘fridge for the next day.  I have some of these Camelbak Eddy Bottles that I like real well and I also use old 1 liter Smartwater bottles. When I can get some more cash, I am going to have nothing but the Camelbak Eddy Bottles because they are more convenient and easier to keep clean. You also need to know that just drinking water is not good enough.  You need to replace your electrolytes as well.  That is why they invented Gatorade back in the day.  I use this stuff — Ultima Replenisher Lemonade – 90 Servings . I throw the powder in one bottle every day and drink it up. Since I am not a doctor, I have no idea if I am getting enough fluids and electrolytes but it seems to work for me. Maybe a reader that is more than a shade tree doctor can add something to this info and let me know if I am on track or not.

Staying hydrated is not something you do after the horse runs out of the barn as evidenced by the email above.  You have to get in front of the dealio and STAY in front of it –every day!

End Note:  Maggie May by Rod Stewart from Every Picture Tells a Story.  I caught Rod Stewart on cable briefly the other night.   THAT Rod Stewart and THIS Rod Stewart are not the same same.  You reckon aliens got the real one?

I enjoy your ramblings. Entertainment, education & a different view point all rolled into one read, I can’t ask more than that.

“Maggie May” during the summer of ’71 was on every radio station in every car I got a ride in while hitchen the west coast that summer. I am not the same person today that I was in ’71… that’s just life in my case, so maybe Rod Stewart was not aliens?

    Keep on rambling andyj

What the hell are those things laying on the step in the picture …. I have lost 2 brothers, 1 s-i-l, 2 b-i-l and 1 uncle to those damn things. They all thought it wouldn’t get them! I miss their company … we all were close.

They are what they appear to be. Miss K and I are not closet smokers and I have even blogged about it in the past.

Google “Home Remedies for Kidney Stones”.

A few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day will help prevent kidney stones and has shown to dissolve them before they can get out of hand.

Got a jar of dill pickles in your fridge…use the juice from them until you can get to the store for some ACV.

  • Janice Darlin’, I’ll drink to that! We’re out here just west of Whitsett, and the heat is horrendous along with the wind, anything you drink seems to be gone in minutes. We’re drinking no less than 2-3 gallons of water a day and according to the color chart, IT JUST AIN’T ENOUGH! The company people ( we see about 10 different companies a day that come through and offer us water and Gatoraid (which we don’t turn down) All in all, water determines your energy level in this heat! today, was a little cooler and I didn’t drink as much as I should have, and tonight, well let’s say I really feel my age. Just remember, if ya ain’t needin’ ta pee, ya just ain’t drinkin’ enuff!

  • Just came back over, I lost a few of my bookmarks in a screwup.

I was a medic in the Army and we made up our own rehydration powder that seemed to work better than the issue stuff, lus we didn’t have to sign for it.

    1 teaspoon of baking soda

    1/2 teaspoon of sugar

    1/2 teaspoon of salt

Mix them into 1 quart of water and drink at least 1 quart mixed like this for every 3 quarts of water you drink/sweat out.
