The Puckerbrush Irregular - Your Local Brush Country News

Old age is not as bad as I thought. It’s a good feeling when you just don’t give a damn anymore and you feel lucky just to wake up in the morning.   Stolen from my blog buddy  Greg.

Saturday morn here in the Outliers of South Texas.  Chilly, breezy, good.  Just got in from the morning jaunt with Vela Von and gave her a bully stick to occupy her for a bit.  Now if you are not knowing what a bully stick is, well, it is a bull penis all dehydrated or cooked up or something.  Looks like a big Slim Jim – kinda sorta and it appears there is ample supply of bull pizzles in Tejas.  Who woulda thunk it?

The way Vela Von goes through ’em, maybe I need to be buying elephant pizzles or somesuch.   Of course, since she is una ultima Prima Dogga, she only gets the best JUMBO BULLY STICKS Made in USA~Grass-Fed Kosher American Beef~No Antibiotics No Growth Hormones~Grain-Free Treats.  Like I mentioned before, she often eats better than I do.

Internet antenna foreground, OTA antenna 'hind it.

Internet antenna foreground, OTA antenna ‘hind it.

One of the things on the piddlin’ list last week was gettin’ the HD OTA antenna up in the air. The Wooster Brush Extension Pole, 8-16 feet came in and that is done. These extension poles are the cat’s ass for gettin’ an antenna up in the air. One of mine has been out in the weather every day for the past 4 years and is still going strong. A good, good Made in the USA product. I get 53 OTA digital stations which seems like a goodly number to me and bein’ as how they pass through the DVR, I can pause ’em and record them if I wish.   I said kinda half jokin’ that one of the reasons for this antenna was to pick up that Laredo News so I would have a heads up when the Cartel incursion across the border started in earnest and plain sight.  I get Laredo now and a bonus station in Nuevo Laredo.  Only half jokin’ mind you………. pay attention now.

You know it is a curious thing when I talk about how remote and solitary the livin’ can be down here in the Puckerbrush and yet I can order seafood overnight from Oregon that is so fresh I can almost hear the ocean when I put my ear to the delivery box or my hermit bud out toward Terlingua can order his favorite deep dish Chicago pizza and have it there next day almost and still yet warm from the oven.  It is a deceptive provenance that lulls us.  Maybe this electronically insular world citizen life we live makes us overlook with some regularity what is really happening in our backyard.  Main stream media is definitely not reporting it on the Nightly News and you cannot convince me that is not by design.

I am well south of the Burrito Border* here and I have been for several years now.  95 miles north of

Dog walkin'

Dog walkin’

Laredo and Nuevo Laredo,  115 miles north and east of Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras.  Even when I was not down here in the Puckerbrush,  I was knowin’ about illegal immigration.  A friend of a friend had a cabinet shop up north of Dallas  and the crazy expansion up there 12-15 years ago when I was still doin’ the Shiny Shoe routine made him fat.  He employed several illegals and I got to know one couple who was about my age.  They had several kids in Mexico and the oldest daughter was the caretaker of the house in their absence. They went home every Christmas and stayed a month and then came back to work in the cabinet shop 7 days a week until next Christmas.  He told me when they crossed the Rio Grande,  they were carrying mostly water, as much as they could – gallons of it, one change of clothes, a tad of food and he had a 22 caliber zip gun made from  pieces of galvanized pipe.  Sometimes they would walk for up to two weeks through the desert to get back to North Texas. He would shoot jack rabbits and ground squirrels with the zip gun to feed them.  Just the two of them…..

So this past week something came across my window to the world that was personally disturbing

This

In a shocking reversal of policy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are being told to release illegal immigrants and no longer order them to appear at deportation hearings, essentially a license to stay in the United States, a key agent testified Thursday.

What’s more, the stand down order includes a requirement that the whereabouts of illegals released are not to be tracked.

“We might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether,”suggested agent Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council.

And this-

A top Border Patrol agent revealed Thursday that if border agents follow the law and ask illegal aliens why they are coming to the U.S. they will be terminated.

The Border Patrol previously had a policy of “catch and release” that drew the ire of Border Patrol agents: “These orders are called Notices to Appear (NTA). The only problem, however, is that these official orders are usually ignored; so much so that Border Patrol Agents have dubbed them Notices to Disappear,” Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council testified.

drugYou see any of this on the MSM Nightly News? Me neither;  imagine that.  You think I am concerned?  Is a 50 pound baby fat??   Now, my ol’ buddy from the cabinet shop can bring his whole family across the River and not have to worry about that pesky business of  walking for weeks and evading La Migra.  Just hunt up the closest Border Patrol and turn yourself in.  They are gonna take you in, process you a teeny bit  and turn you loose.  Lest you think this is tinfoil asshattery speculation, let me remind you this has been up close and personal every day life for me going back at least 4 years.   I have seen the tired and thirsty ones come out of the Puckerbrush with their various plastic bag sacks.  I have seen the stolen trucks with a half dozen illegals in the cab and a bed full of dope run from the cops.  I have seen a file of a dozen mules with square burlap packs  cross a road with purpose; the coyotes front and rear with Kalashnikovs slung muzzle down ‘cross their backs.  Me; with my own two eyes. More than once. My real life button down world as I know it.

It is no bueno for damn sure.  I just cannot understand why these laws have been set aside when it is obvious there is a real problem to begin with.  WTF Obama?  I bet you right this minute this policy change news is spreading like wildfire in Latin America.   How do you think this is going to impact the amount of illegal traffic across the border???

Listen here….   I am 50yds off of a good sized north/south State Highway.  I am not so naive as to think I don’t have narco traffic passing me every day headed north.  The normal illegal immigrants are not generally any kind of threat but the cartel traffic is a whole nuther animal. So what happens if their motor overheats, throws a belt,  flat with no spare or no jack, they run off in the ditch, run outta gas ( all real past events) and so on and so on and I am the only light shining for miles.  What ya think los hombres malos are gonna do?  More importantly, what am I gonna do?  Call 911?  Pshaw, right.   John Law is probably only a half hour away on a good night and a truckload of cartel gunmen are gonna outgun a McMullen County deputy or a Texas DPS easy. Grow up quick Vela Von.  I need you.

These are the times we are livin’ in friends and neighbors.   Make sure you ain’t got your head stuck in the sand…. and that is all I am gonna say about that.

*burrito border –  the point of demarcation across the Southwest where the preponderance of fast food joints change from McDs and Wendys to Mexican burritos and taquerias. Can you habla???

End Note: Safe Side by James McMurtry from his Candyland cd.  Is it STILL the safe side?????

“Down in Piedras Negras you gotta watch yourself
There’s a whole lotta hungry people lookin to share some wealth
And when the oilfield’s busted and the peso takes a dive
Stay off the side streets if you wanna come back alive
Yo no busca nada I’m just standin here
Mindin my own business, gonna get back outta here
Back to the safe side”

So, Kosher bully sticks. Does that mean they’re circumcised?

  • And I wonder why we have Border Patrol. Why not just save the money. Oh that’s right, when the short of funds, there is always more taxes. Crazy world indeed.

I agree with cracking down and enforcing immigration laws 100%! Another area that does not get as much attention is why they are coming. They come because your friend got a job at the cabinet shop. The cabinet shop should be fined the first time, fined up the a$$ the second time and closed down with arrests the third. Nothing pisses me off more than these business owners that take advantage of the system in the same EXACT way that welfare cheater do!

Kerry really gets to the heart of the problem. American’s love them some cheap vegetables, fruit, boneless chicken, hotel rooms, golf courses, etc. Start enforcing immigration laws by arresting the employers and shutting down their companies and you’ll see (1) a dramatic reduction in undocumented workers and (2) hysterical, angry cries from the American public as the costs of goods and services shoot up. Not gonna happen.

Let’s admit it. The only way to stop undocumented workers is to create a way for them to be documented. Anything else is a fool’s errand.

I agree with both you and Kerry. Two things need to happen to set the stage for that. Visa overstays need to be eliminated. The borders need to be sealed. We have the means to make both of those happen now. Then you clamp down on the employers of illegals and shake the trees. Vet what falls out and deport the undesirable ones.

FWIW, there are two classifications of illegals being sent back home. Deportations and returns. Deportations are sending the bad guys away, returns are just like they sound like. The Deportation numbers:
        Clinton: 0.8 million
        Bush: 2 million
        Obama: 2 million

        The returns:
        Clinton: approx 12 million
        Bush: approx 8 million
        Obama: approx 2 million

And to add, the growing heroin epidemic esp in the Northeast Corridor may provide the impetus to strengthen the Border. The few times I have seen drug mules and notified Border Patrol, the response was MUCH greater compared to me reporting a mixed group of men, women and children which is usually ho hum and lackadaisical.

I only have one thing to add to your totals of returns and deportations. In 2008 when the financial crisis started border crossing dropped dramatically. So while I do agree that there has been a slow down in the amount of deportations and returns overall, so it is hard to do an accurate comparison. Enforcing our immigration laws are our best bet. Nothing has to be done other than our politicians to do the job they were elected to do. Wait, did I just say that?!!
