Spring Notes

Maintenance on Little Blue - the primary power source at the Secret Hideout

Maintenance on Little Blue – the primary power source at the Secret Hideout

Spring is welcome here in South Texas. Renewal, new beginnings, anticipation of change; it is all good. This time last year I was just beginning what would turn out to be a 5 month long sabbatical at the Secret Hideout.  Sometimes your body and soul need a good recharge and you are not even aware of it.  That was the case last year.   Extraneous material goods were shed, my life was simplified and I got to spend good time with My Bro.   Wouldn’t change a minute of it looking back. Fact of the matter is Spring has always been an auspicious time for me.

The Spring of 2009 was the start of this blog – Seven years and hundreds of posts ago.   My Bro had stepped in to help me pick up the pieces after 2007-2008 when me and lots of other people lost what little we had managed to grab .   I had walked out on Shiny Shoe world in 2002 and didn’t have two nickels or a wife six months later.   Eatin’ baloney was a treat, $500 cars were just slightly out of reach and next week was uncertain at best.  Somehow or other me and BFF Cait came out the other side not that much worse for the wear – (and you wonder why we are so close??)  It all crashed out in 2007-2008 after a few years of prodigious success and I ended up in the cab of a bulldozer – which ain’t a bad place to be.   I see alot of those same ominous signs now that I saw back then.  Difference is I remember well what it felt like to have the rug jerked out from under me and free fall helpless to the very bottom.   I can’t help the rug jerkin’ part but I can influence how hard and far I fall this time.  This go ’round I fear the crash is gonna be murder times 10.   I hope I am wrong.

Sittin' on top of the Muenster Arch - Muenster, TX March 2011

Sittin’ on top of the Muenster Arch – Muenster, TX March 2011

The Spring of 2011 was the start of my gate guarding career.  Holy cats, 5 years gone by already!  I daresay there are few folks readin’ this that ever did any time up in the Barnett Shale. Back then I woulda thought trippin’ pipe was some druggie thing and nipplin’ up had something to do with thin t-shirts and chilly weather.   The Barnett is where Little Blondie, Tuco the DogThe Old Girl and me got initiated to this oil patch business.  Out of that player’s quartet, I am the only one remaining.  If you are recent around here, click the links to catch up on the history.  Some of those now absent will be missed for the rest of my life. Others?  Well, Thank God and Greyhound you are gone and that is all I am gonna say about that.  This gate guarding has been a boon for me and I am thankful for every Sunday that rolls around and another paycheck in the bank.   The first rule I learned was there is no snivelin’ in the oil patch and I hold to that still yet today.  Hell it ain’t perfect by a long damn shot but you just tell me what is these days?  When the years start to weigh you learn to play smarter; not harder. If you don’t like it, your house has wheels, right?  Crank that bitch up and get the hell out!  Spare me the pity party as I got no patience for them that lost their backbone somewhere along the way and blame it on old.  Me? I am stayin’ put while the bees are in the butter.

Examining the murdered corpse of the Old Girl

Examining the murdered corpse of the Old Girl

I was only about 3 miles from here in the Old Girl back on Easter Sunday 2013.  The events that day are known as The Big Hails now.  Re-reading that day’s entry, I notice now it is one of the lowest rated blog posts I have ever published.  That shouldn’t surprise me overly much ’cause I know some folks take a kind of unnatural pleasure in other’s misfortune.   I am just betting some of those same people who down voted that post are still readin’ here 3 years later. That would make y’all some kinda perverse sumbitches.  I am sorry for you if that be the case.  Just be knowin’  karma evens it all up in the end.  Trust me on that. I prefer to remember those that stepped up and offered the shirt off their back with no hesitation… and there were plenty in that category.

February 6, 2014.   “I got this buddy, Fat Boy Scott, who revels in posting pictures of gloriously hot women on his blog for no other reason than he can. He has a thing for Kate Upton. This one is for you Scott…….”  R.I.P. my friend. The world is a lesser place without you.

My Bro and I were talking on the phone last evening as we are wont to do these days.  He is 17 months younger than me and often times our talk turns to how we managed to end up where we are just now on the back side of two lives of two brothers.   It wasn’t easy for either of us gettin’ here and gettin’ old is certainly not for the squeamish.   The good measure of a man is how his kids turned out and by that yardstick both of us did tolerable well.  I can live with that.

Today might be the worst day ever but tomorrow could be your best.  Never will know if you don’t show up ready to play.

End Note: Against the Wind by Bob Seger from the Against the Wind cd.  This album went quadruple-platinum in 1980 so I am not the only one diggin’ it.

Against the wind was what we were doing on Friday for sure. Was sitting outside while the gate was slow and it sure did blow in.

    “I hope I am wrong.”

You are. Our country remains strong. All the objective indicators are good.

Glad you’re enjoying Spring. We are, too. It came early here in Missouri.

Think you’ll make any progress on that novel?

I hope so Joel. Our two worlds don’t have much convergence. From where I sit, this Spring is not as good as the last which wasn’t as good as the one before. Since MSM reports little of the honest truth any more, most of what I have to go on is what I see myself.

As far as the book- ehhhhhhhhhhhh. Sometimes it is enough chore just to come up with a 1000 words for the blog.

You are right about that. If one really wants to see a country in trouble, just take a ride through Dille or Cotulla Texas. Talk about towns that are drying up! Didn’t look that way a couple of years ago.

Sorry, I should clarify: when I say “our country remains strong,” I don’t mean that there aren’t pockets of the country that are problematic. See, e.g., Detroit and Flint. But the aggregate indicators for the entire nation overall are strong right now, especially compared to Europe.

    Morn’n Andy,

Believe I started following your blog right after you met up with the blonde and just before the hail damage. Time flies don’t it!?

Gonna be a warm one I think.

Have a good week. Pat da bitch and give her a treat.

Time is streaking by Vince! And you are right, this year is going to be warm in more ways than one.
