Arrested Development

Headscratcher for sure ………

Last night during our last foray outside before bed,  I saw something down the lease road at the very farthest limit of my floodlights.   This time o’ night I don’t just fall out the door like I am taking out the trash at my house on the corner of Fairyland Drive.  Don’t work like that down here…………..  First off,  Vela Von scoots out and if she doesn’t go into her all teeth and bad bark mode, I figure things are pretty safe for an Ol’ Fat Man to venture out of the NO Princess Palace.  Caution is warranted since I am mandated from keeping any bowling equipment close to hand.  Best I can manage is a stout black brush staff that is demonstrated deadly on buzztails.   Unless me and a Puckerbrush Hound are venturing pretty far afield, I leave the stick leanin’ up against the Palace.

Well, last night I was hangin’ out waitin’ on a pup to run off some energy and do her business and I noticed an ethereal blob in the road,  just slightly different color than the rest.  ‘Bout all I could tell was it wasn’t no man shape which would be my worst fear.  I have seen most everything there is to see on this Ranch critter-wise.  Bobcat, fox, javelina, hog, deer, turkey; they say there s a panther been seen more than once just down my road here.  Ain’t seen that one yet.  This ‘un looked to be way big for a chupacabra.  I started walkin’ toward the blob wishin’ I had a flashlight in my pocket -and a 45-  when Vela joined me.   I guess her dog radar was janglin’ and she was steady low growling as we did our creepy slow walk toward the blob with her right at my knee.  Made me feel some braver all said.

Texas Desert Bighorn

Texas Desert Bighorn

I just could not make out what the thing was and when I couldn’t stand to get any closer (it had stayed stock still this whole time looking at us) I clapped my hands twice and it turned and bounded off into the brush -fast.  Sort of a leaping, big hopping motion.  Now, I swear, in the second it took to get off the road my only thought was Bighorn Sheep.  I have been over and over it again this morning and that is still the only thing I can think of.  This Ranch is high fenced in part and this area is not under high fence.  In the year I have been here, I have never heard mention of them keeping any Exotics so I just don’t know.  I have seen strange things here in Texas – like an Emu running down the road outside of Blanco so who knows? First of my ranch boys that come through here I am gonna figure out how to tell him about it without seeming like I was drunked up or something. I sure don’t want it cataloged like that Little Bear episode back in the Spring.

I finally had to admit my Millenicom/Verizon internet access plan was out dated and needed to go.  Been on that little aircard for what?  6 years?? The plan has more than doubled in price and the limited signal here finally just wore me out.  1xRTT SUCKS!   I get a good AT&T signal and finally threw in the towel and got an AT&T mifi dealio.  Not here yet but we shall see how it works.  When BFF Cait heard I was sorta kinda joining the 21st Century and getting a data plan,  she insisted strongly I take a look at an iPhone 7.   I can tell ya right now  little i  anything is not probable during my lifetime.

I bought a base model Lenovo Thinkpad last year.  I just checked  and it has been almost exactly a year since I got the Thinkpad for $229 off of WOOT.   It isn’t cutting edge by any means but is was slim and chic and did just OK.   Lately, it has had some quirky security chip (whatever that is) issues and sometimes it just gets tired and shuts off.  Handwritin’ on the wall if you care to see it for sure. I got to looking for a replacement and came to a realization.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 Mk4

Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 Mk4

I basically quit any techie/social media/computer growth after 2008.  That is why I hung on to the Motorola RAZR phone for so long and basically disavow anything little i. I am still stuck after 2008 and perfectly OK with that.  The mainest reason being I am still doing the same thing on the internets now as I was doing in 2008 – mas o menos.  Makes perfect sense to me.  If the mission doesn’t change, the same tools are still viable.

So I bought a Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 Mk4 ca. 2006.  Hell, I liked it so much I bought another one.  The intellectual mosquitoes who spend their livelong day twitterbooking and facechatting do not understand buying such a clunky brick of laptop-ness.  They also do not understand this statement: Two is one and one is none.

For those of y’all out of the knowing a Toughbook is  this here – The Toughbook 19 features a 10.1″ LCD capable of up to 6000 nit in direct sunlight, and is powered by Windows® and a standard voltage Intel Core™ i5 vPro™ processor. Integrated options include a 5MP camera, backlit keyboard (emissive or rubber), GPS receiver, 4G LTE multi carrier mobile broadband and a multi touch + digitizer LCD that can work with any type of glove. In addition, a 6-foot drop & IP65 certified design with a full magnesium alloy case, helps to ensure that the Toughbook 19 will stand up to the most rigorous environments.  It doesn’t have a fan to suck dust into its’ guts and it comes with all these little rubber covers to seal off the ports.  If you are thinking this is a laptop made to order for the South Texas Puckerbrush I would be in full agreement.   It reminds me of a ’72 Mack truck.  It was the ugliest damn truck on the road but it was still runnin’ when the others were broke down and off in the road ditch.

I am still setting them up and trying to learn all the bells and whistles. Finding software for a 10 year old machine is also a challenge.  I am digging every minute of it.  This Toughbook was over $4k back in the day.  I picked up both these refurbs for less than $250.  Gotta love it.

Three little housekeeping items to close out this week…………

1) I am taking off for an adventure trip the third week in December.  People to see, things to do and places to go.  Plans are for an absence of 30 days or more and then return back to this gate.  Not a normal thing here in the oil patch to hold a gate for somebody but when you got 14 months straight with no days off,  you get some extry perks.  If any of y’all have some gate guarding experience and are looking for a quality gate and 4 or more decent paychecks, drop me a note : andy(at)myoldrv.com.

!! No slackers and no trailer trash por favor !!    🙂

2)  No Amazon affiliate links this week and only one or two last week.  You can still hit the link in the sidebar or the top of the page and throw a few pesos my way.  Even with the absence of links,  plenty of you blog friends have been helping out and I appreciate it; I surely do.  Remember it costs you nothing.

3)  I watched a documentary on TCM this week from 1942 called Native Land.  I went back on the DVR just to jot down this quote:

“The old words, the historic documents; we built them into
bridges and dynamos and concrete cities….

Democracy, fought for and built into the steel girders of America.

We struggled 300 years and took Freedom as our inheritance.”

Ummmmmmmm,  How do you like me now?  /sarc

End Note:  Long Time Gone Live by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young from the 4 Way Street CD.  45 years later, there is still no equal.
