Better Rethink That One....

I reckon I have a few readers who have been reading the blog for awhile;  one of them is Bob L.  It is funny how someone can become a good friend when you have never met or spoken to them except digitally.  Such is the age we live in folks.  I can dig it.

My May Day post revealed my tornado evacuation plan consisted of simply crawling inside the nearest road culvert that would fit me (us).   Bob L., being  the good person he is, pointed out my simple plan needs to be re-thunk.  Proving again, nothing is ever as simple as it seems.  And Bob L.,  being a long time reader, knows I can be a hard headed bastard so he also submitted visual proof to bolster his statements.

Texas Power and Light has some experience with culverts and they are obviously more cautious in their culvert exploration forays than I was planning to be  — with good reason.

A Texas Power & Light crew, putting in lines for an addition to the Hallettsville Airport, found this in a culvert.

Yeah, those gators can be pesky rascals.

Gator munching a police car

I worry about alot of things –gators are not one of them here in Far North Texas.  Now If I was south of the Burrito Border, it would be a different story.  (The Burrito Border is the imaginary line in Texas where the prevalence of fast food joints changes over from McDonalds and Wendys to Tex-Mex like Taco Bell etc.  The border used to be around San Antone; now it has inched up to somewhere around San Marcos. ) Gators don’t have a danged thing to do with Burritos– they prefer small poodles over all– but they are more likely to be found down in South Texas- just sayin’.

Bob L.  probably figured I would do the North Texas Exclusion on the Gator thing so he included this pic for good measure.  Another Texas Power and Light pic…

Passle O' Rattlers

Alrighty then Bob L. Got my attention there my friend! I guess I better do a little scouting before I run headlong into a road culvert. Looks like a flashlight, a 12 gauge and a poking stick needs to be included in the evac plan.

FWIW, The gator in the first pic was 18′ 2″ long. There were 187 rattlers in that wad.

The things we call groups of animals interests me — a gaggle of geese, a murder of crows, a sounder of wild hogs. I figured there would be a descriptive word for gators and snakes too and I was right. A group of snakes (like in the pic) is a rhumba. A bunch of baby gators is a pod, adult gators is a congregation. An 18 foot gator is a BIG ASS ALLIGATOR — and I said that. 🙂

  • That snake picture almost made me faint. I just want to curl up in a little ball and cry.

Ain’t that the truth Scott! I have had this thing about rattlers and confined spaces ever since Kim Darby fell in that snake hole in True Grit.

DANG!! After reading your tornado evac blog, I started thinking about what I’d do too. I think we’ll likely end up out under the cattle guard at our gate if the proverbial poop hits the air motivator. Especially if the opossum isn’t there as he usually is. Even if he is…I think I could win that fight.

Nowhere else to go except a creek that’s likely too far for me to waddle to in an emergency…and then there’s the whole full of water thing that would likely happen if it’s raining much…
