The Dust is the Thing....

Laying down the dust buster

Early last week I knew we had a problem coming up at our oil field gate guard location.  Dust is a real enemy on this job and we are not the only ones as evidenced by posts in other oilfield gate guard blogs.  The dust has been bad enough with our normal traffic and I knew by talking to some of the company men that our traffic was going to double or even triple by the end of the week.   The Company has been real good about watering our road down to curtail the dust but it finally got to the point it was a fruitless endeavor.  Low humidity, high temps and heavy traffic negated any benefits in an hour or less.  I just told them they were wasting there time and to forget it.  Occasionally, one of the water tankers will pull the plug on his fresh water load and drench the road on the way out the gate for Miss K at night.  That application has longer effect being at night and all.

So I told the Company Man we needed a better solution for the dust problem and he said he would seal the road with a  magnesium chloride solution.   True to his word, the guy that builds all of our pads in here showed up the other morning with a tank full of the dust beater solution in a pull behind trailer.   The results were immediate and impressive and I have mostly scientific proof to back that statement up.  Miss K has a Dust-O-Meter inside the RV.  It is the top of the Keurig coffee maker.  She wipes it off and reports (or bitches  – luv ya baby, really 🙂  ) daily about the coating of dust on the machine.  Best she can figure, the Dust-O-Meter is showing an 85% reduction in dust accumulation since the application of the magnesium chloride.  You can tell exactly where it starts below the Old Girl.  The trucks just come fogging the dust up the hill and all of a sudden it stops — no more dust.  Good stuff!

The plea for chocolate --How sad!

Dust might have a possible use that I just uncovered this morning.  Apparently Miss K is using it to transmit messages to her fans in her absence.  The message was written in the dusty windows on the Piece of Crap Camry aka PACO that we picked up in Edinburgh coming back from Tucson.  Time will tell if any fans take pity and bring her back some chocolate to feed her grim choco-addiction.   Be better for me if they did ’cause she can get more than a little surly if there is no chocolate in the house.

  • WOW! Andy, I can’t believe there’s a remedy! Could you send a little magnesium chloride our way? Kathy, I would SO send you chocolates if the Super S in Nixon sold any that hadn’t already expired… :/

      Debbie,
It had evolved into an acute health issue. Miss K and I both had sore throats, coughing and runny noses — much like a bad allergy. The company was more than agreeable when it came right down to it. Doesn’t hurt to ask —
