Taking a Step Back

I have been thinking for sometime now all this tweeting, twittering socialized media was just not for me.   Seems like it is coming to a head this week…

My personal communication device

Cell service is sparse out here on the south side of the Permian Basin.  Luckily, our Wilson amp is hauling the mail and the rig hands have figured that out.  We usually have someone parked across the drive in what Miss Kathy calls the cell phone parking area taking advantage of our boosted signal.  Last evening one of the boys was parked over there and looked like he was having some trouble.  I dropped by and asked…he said ‘no signal’  I asked which carrier and he said it was one of those pay as you go deals.  ‘Want to use my phone?’ .  He looked up and said ‘It is important for me to call my bondsman today.’  Well alrighty then!  I handed him over my phone.  You woulda thought Tuco the Dog had lobbed a steaming doggie dooty bomb right from her puckery little butt straight into his hand!   I profess that the ol’ RAZR isn’t much to look at; what with that cracked screen and clear packing tape on it and all but he made his call successfully.  That oughta stand for something!

This whole social media/sharing everything is just about to get the best of me this week.   The Facebook is changing its’ policy yet again and then they are going to make $100 billion on their IPO.  Every time they change their policy it means they have figured out more ways to mine your private info and they want to sell it to someone.   I hear tell it, they have enough users to be the third most populous nation in the world — right behind India.   Then, Google is updating their policies for the same reasons.  Now that Google selling my personal info off in big chunks has always scared me worse than The Facebook.  I figure they are just way smarter to begin with.

So I don’t tweet or update my status hourly or any such silliness.   If anything, I still wish you had to look somebody up in a book and then physically twist a dial with numbers on it to reach out and touch somebody.  I don’t even like to text truth be known.  I know, I know — that is so 90’s  — I hear it all the time from Miss K and the Kids.   Most likely,  if you do text me, you will get “K”, “Y” or”N” as the onliest replies. If you want me to expound, best call me.  You have the number.

So I think I am going to quit The Facebook.   Mainly, I check in to see what the 2 kids are up to anyway.  Sometimes they are being good and sometimes not so much.  They would probably like it better if I didn’t comment on their status’ and embarrass them.  Come to think of it, I bet that cracked-up phone doesn’t ring with a real call once a week.  I know I don’t call anybody more than once a week or so.  Maybe Miss K could act as my agent — take my calls and such.  Then I could use her phone to call the people I really wanted to talk to.

Now I guess more than a few of you folks are going to walk away from this post with the idea I am just an anti-social old codger.  You could be right I guess.  Most folks got way more to say than I want to take in.   As long as we still live in a free country and attendance is not mandatory, I will be lookin’ just like this; doing what I do.

End Note: Hell’s Kitchen by Matt King from the Rube cd.  ‘Evils cookin’ and its’ smellin’ strong.’

You aren’t the only one I’ve heard those sentiments about facebook from. I have been cleaning my facebook out for the last few weeks to only include family and close friends and like you, I very rarely post updates anymore.

I like facebook. I’ve reconnected with several old friends, and have made several new friends through FB too. Same with LinkedIn. Internet social media are like any media (print, TV, radio). Use what you like and ignore the rest.

I feel lucky to be alive in the 21st century with so much to choose from. That’s also why I love living in a big city. YMMV.

I’m with you on both the phone and the privacy issues. There are probably only three people who ever call me; aside from electricians, plumbers & other professionals. Why I have a cell phone is almost beyond me.

Facebook and Google are so hungry for my personal information that it’s scary. Makes me want to go live even farther out in the boonies than I do now!
