Everything Happens for a Reason

It was the day after Christmas and my butt was planted in the Big Ass Suburban headed up north 60 miles.   I told a local fella where I was headed and the what-for and he said “Aye God, that is a rough little burg!”   He was born and raised in Dilley, TX and he said that back in the 70’s when Dilley played this town in football it was the dreaded game of the season.  Seems they had a prodigious problem with sticky burrs/sand spurs on the field.  So much so that the Refs would hand the ball to the center and he could hike it without placing the ball on the ground.  I hate those sand spurs with white hot passion and could only imagine what it would be like to roll around in a field of ’em for 60 minutes! You can’t be a puss and survive growing up in South Texas.  Just sayin’……

New runnin' buddy looks like

New runnin’ buddy looks like

So the whole reason I was headed north went down like this here……… Gettin’ a new dog had become a priority of the first order and BFF Cait was workin’ it every single day. She was on a mission after all. Both of us come to the conclusion a GSD (German Shepherd Dog) was the pick and getting one from some far away place was no bueno because of the transport costs involved.  I put the Google Fu to work lookin’ for a reputable GSD breeder within reasonable distance and this place up north was my first result.  I put BFF Cait on the trail and turned her loose.

Now this is where it is gonna get sorta Twilight Zone weird.  Top shelf dog breeders generally have a waiting list and Christmas is a hot time for buying new puppies.  Makes ya think us lookin’ for a damn good pup right around Christmas is just plain silly, right?  BFF Cait emailed me back the SAME day and said this breeder has a 12 week old female available.  Seems as how she had taken a deposit on the pup and then those folks had just vanished from the face of the Earth.  Every attempt to contact them was fruitless so she felt OK offerin’ up this pup after trying to get ahold of these folks for a month solid -and- she was willing to give us a military discount.  So the two of them exchanged emails and pics and pedigrees and health records and my BFF finally green lighted me on headin’ up the road for a look-see.

Once upon a time there was another dog that layed in the same same place. First time this 'un did it, the big tears rolled.

Once upon a time there was another dog that layed in the same same place. First time this ‘un did it, the big tears rolled.

But not before she told me this…….  The breeding on this pup is pure DDR on one side and DDR/Czech from the other parent and the accepted practice seems to be they give these pups Germanic registered names. Don’t ask me why, it just is.  Cait said “Dad, you are not going to believe what this dog’s name is!!!  It is Vela von  some-long-ass-german-stuff.  Do you know what Vela means??”  Well, uh no, daughter. Clue me.  “Well, besides being a constellation in the Southern Hemisphere it also means ‘watchman’ in Spanish.”  When she said that the hairs on my neck prickled up.  This was all just gettin’ a little too damn weird because one of the things we had discussed at length was my desire to add to my overall plan re: my bowing hobby and that is one of the mainest reasons we picked GSDs for the both of us.

So there I was on a Saturday mornin’ pulling up to a house out in the country and the lady comin’ out the front door to meet me with an imposing looking GSD at her side.  Turns out that dog was Vela Von’s daddy.  We exchanged pleasantries and she said the pup you are lookin’ at is behind you there in that outside exercise pen.  I hadn’t even noticed.  I turned around to see a skinny little black face pup sitting back on her haunches starin’ me square in the eye.  When I walked up to the pen, she got excited and stood up against the wire to greet me.  The dog lady had said she was fearless;  me walkin’ up to her pen with some authority did not cow her in the least.  I stepped back a few steps and she sat back down and watched me with every bone in her body. She never barked or whined or got all silly ass submissive like some pups are wont to do.

All mine - that Vela Von

All mine – that Vela Von

20 minutes later we were sealin’ the deal and I was headed back south to the gate. Vela Von was sittin’ in a plastic laundry basket strapped in the front seat. She had never been on a road trip or put inside a laundry hamper but she didn’t try to get out or whine the whole way back.  She sat there lookin’ out the windshield at this and that as we drove down the road. Just as if ridin’ down the road in a laundry basket was the most natural thing for a dog pup to be doin’ on a Saturday mornin’.

That was 3 weeks ago and as with anything, it has not all been soft fuzzy bunnies here at the NO Princess Palace.  GSDs tend to be mouthy and both my hands are carrying the results of puppy teeth too sharp.  Vela Von’s routine after her litter mates were sold off was daytime hours by herself outside in the ex pen and nights back in the house (maybe the garage?); there was no attempt at housebreaking so we are dealing with a few accidents in the RV.  They are diminishing as each day goes by.  The floor of the Palace is littered with dog toys and crap I forgot to pick up that caught her inquisitive eye.  Puppies is gonna be puppies and that is a fact Jack.  Still yet and even so,  this little booger is growing on me.  Better yet, she gives me a reason to get up and get after it each and every morning.  Sometimes she does stuff or causes me to flash back to Tuco the Dog and that causes me to get a little pensive but it is not a bad sad.  To be expected I reckon;  you just don’t erase a damn fine dog out of your life because she has passed on. You carry her in your heart always.

Another pure dee fact is we don’t live on Easy Street in a suburb of Cubicle City.  The closest Starbucks is  68.4 miles away and I am more likely to see a buzz tail snakey or javelina than some millennial with a shit zu (snort!) on a leash.  Lord love a duck! Can you imagine??   I gotta have a dog that has the grit to live this life right along side me and them kind don’t happen along every day.

Each blessed day it gets a bit better. Life is good down here in the Pucker  Brush – no doubt ’bout that!

To BFF CAIT: This was possible and it happened due to your focus and attention to the mission.  I never look at Vela Von that I don’t think of you.

End Note: Set You Free by Allison Moorer from the Definitive Collection.  This Alabama gal has a great voice.  Think Shelby Lynne or Kelly Willis.  She used to be around alot and then she wasn’t.  Maybe being married to Steve Earle makes it that way.

Sounds like a match made in heaven! Love the GSD. Best dog we ever had wandered up in my dad’s yard and no one claimed her. Named her “fluffy” because we were teaching our deaf son to say and lipread “f”s. Same dog knocked him down and sat on him as he was trying to cross a street when a car was coming that he didn’t see. She was with us 15 years. Only thing that frightened her was thunder. Crazy dog would jump in your lap every time. Miss her still. Best of luck with Vela Von!!

You may have already stated it but get you a fake snake. Start traing VV to avoid them. Shake that snake and tell her SNAKE big time. Put on a string and hide it were she will walk in it’s path. Pull the string and yell SNAKE very loud. Keep VV between you and the snake. That will help her learn to walk between you and a snake pushing you away from the snake.

    She’s a beauty alright.

Yes it does. 😉 Started riding in ’82 on a ’83 Honda Nighthawk then in ’85 went to a Wide Glide, ’86 Liberty FLH, ’90 FLHTC and now a ’96 Heritage Softail Special.

VV looks like a great dog. I liked Nancy’s comment about training her to avoid snakes. You can’t coddle her completely but being curious about everything, like pups are going to be, can be dangerous. Best of luck with the new pup. Good on Cait for finding her.
