The Palace at dusky dark

The Palace at dusky dark

Silly stuff I noticed this week……  You can get a night light for your commode that comes on when you raise the lid.  The 2016 F-150 comes with back up assist which looks like it tells you how to back up a trailer on a screen or something.  OK, so people have gotten along just fine for decades turning on the light in the bathroom if you gotta pee and using mirrors to back a trailer up.  Hell, I parallel parked an eighteen wheeler one time in a rest area just to see if I could.  So what gives now?  Have people really become so helpless? or lazy? Christ on a cracker, that is pitiful.

Finally got out of here this past Friday for a supply run. It has been seven weeks since the last one.  $29.99 for a 40lb propane fill at the Ace Hardware in Cotulla and I am trying to remember how much it was last time.  I think they have raised their prices which makes no sense since petroleum prices are down.  Gas was $2.05 a gallon at the HEB and I also dropped $247 there for groceries.  By necessity on a supply run many of the items I purchase are fresh or frozen and require refrigeration.   5lbs of bacon, 3 dozen eggs, a whole chicken, a pork loin, family packs of chicken breasts and pork chops, 3 different kinds of lunch meat, cheese, 4 loaves of bread, hamburger meat, breakfast sausage — you get the idea.   Part of the necessary equipment in most grocery getters here in the Puckerbrush is a cooler.    My last two supply runs have both exceeded the capacity of my small ENGEL USA 19 quart Cooler/Dry Box and that is no bueno.  The 67 mile trip back from the HEB was not so bad in April when the temps were in the 70’s but it takes on new importance when the outside temp gauge on the Big Ass Suburban registers 100 degrees. I don’t remember the last time I had a good bowl of ice cream; ice cream soup is just not the same.

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

My Bro had a Yeti Tundra cooler at the Secret Hideout that did an amazing job keeping the beers cold. It also came with an amazing price tag and at that point I could not even justify the cost.  You know, everybody has some sort of cooler laying around and I left a couple up at the Hideout. Some had broken hinges or the handles were missing or maybe one had some damage from bowling equipment.  I didn’t think any of them were worth packing down to South Texas.  So I did my research and looked at every review I could find for decent coolers.  Yeti, Coleman, Pelican, Igloo — I looked at all of them for days.  I wanted a cooler that would keep ice and one that would hold up to the rigors of the oil patch.  The same name was at the top of every list. The same name is on the cooler in back of 80% of the work trucks I see here.  I guess this is a case of you get what you pay for. Buy once / Cry once.

I bought a Yeti Tundra 50 Cooler and it is enroute to the Fowlerton area as I write this. (I bought mine cheaper than the Amazon price – just sayin’….)

*****************

I am no stranger to Hwy 97 between Fowlerton and Cotulla.  Counting the 2 1/2 year stint at the other gate,  I have been in this area over 3 years now. Back in the day, you would see 25 gate guards working along that stretch of highway.  Friday I saw 4 and I gotta say it was depressing what with me talking here recently about the oil patch pickin’ up and all.  Maybe I got it wrong?

Saturday my phone rang and caller ID said it was my Big Boss. Now he ain’t calling on a holiday weekend unless there is something major happening.  My first thought, of course, was this gate was closing and I was out of a job.  Couldn’t have been farther from the truth……..  He is out of gate guards and needs some new ones ASAP!  He said it was the same with all the companies right now.

I am thinking it is not so much that the oil business has picked up tremendously as the fact that many gate guards failed to find work down here and they left for other endeavors.  So if  you are thinking it might be a good time to get in the gate guarding business or you bailed out of here last year when there was no work, now might be a good time to give it a shot. Contact me and I will put you in touch with the right folks.

End Note:  Heaven Was Needing a Hero  – Fallen Soldier Tribute by Jo Dee Messina.  Memorial Day 2016. Memorial Day is the traditional start of summer.  Beach, swimming pools, and backyard barbecue is the agenda for most.  But that’s not what the day is about. This day we remember those who gave all in defense of the freedom we enjoy.

and then there is this……..

Hi Andy,Sorry to show this to you just after your recent purchase, but… http://tinyurl.com/j2w8tkl I have one of the bigger ones and it keeps things frozen rock hard and it runs off 12v, the cig. lighter socket. Mine has worked flawlessly now at -8 degrees F for a couple of years now and still going strong. Steve

      Thanks Steve!
That freezer may be a valid option in the future but I needed something simple and tough. A cooler I could leave in the Suburban or outside in the weather and it would still function — and portable! That freezer weighs 45 lbs empty. I could not see horsing it in and out of the suburban and the Palace full of food by myself.
