Born Fighting - Makers and Takers

(Sung in a curmudgeonly voice)

My Life chorus by Billy Joel ca.1978

I don’t need you to worry for me cause I’m alright
I don’t want you to tell me it’s time to come home
I don’t care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life and leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong, don’t get me wrong
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time

My maternal grandparents

Depression-era deplorables -My maternal grandparents

My Sis, who has taken the time to research our family genealogy way, away back,  found one of our great-great-greats who came across the Appalachians from the Carolinas in the 1840s and settled his clan well into the woolly Indian Territory that would eventually become Middle Tennessee.  Quite the adventure back in the day and she even managed to unearth a list of equipment that he assembled to make the trek.  How many oxen, wagons, chickens and barrels of flour etc enumerated line by line.  Fascinating stuff made even more incredible by the fact he was well into his forties at the start of the journey during a time when the male life expectancy was only 48 years.   I puzzled for years over what could have possibly driven a man to embark on such an adventure so late in life.  Just this past year I came to an understanding of how such a curious event was more an expectation of my heritage when I read two books that opened the door to more understanding:

Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America“More than 27 million Americans today can trace their lineage to the Scots, whose bloodline was stained by centuries of continuous warfare along the border between England and Scotland, and later in the bitter settlements of England’s Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland. Between 250,000 and 400,000 Scots-Irish migrated to America in the eighteenth century, traveling in groups of families and bringing with them not only long experience as rebels and outcasts but also unparalleled skills as frontiersmen and guerrilla fighters. Their cultural identity reflected acute individualism, dislike of aristocracy and a military tradition, and, over time, the Scots-Irish defined the attitudes and values of the military, of working class America, and even of the peculiarly populist form of American democracy itself.”

And this one which paints a much bleaker albeit more timely picture:

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis“From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class through the author’s own story of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town.

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of poor, white Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for over forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. In Hillbilly Elegy, J.D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hanging around your neck.”

The author of Born Fighting, Jim Webb, is an American politician and author. He has served as a United States Senator from Virginia, Secretary of the Navy, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, Counsel for the United States House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and Marine Corps officer.

In the private sector he has been an Emmy Award winning journalist, a filmmaker, and the author of ten books. In addition, he taught literature at the United States Naval Academy and was a Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics. As a member of the Democratic Party, Webb announced on November 19, 2014, that he was forming an exploratory committee to evaluate a run for President of the United States in 2016. On July 2, 2015, he announced that he would be joining the race for the Democratic nomination for President, but stepped down from running in the primaries on October 20, 2015, stating that he was “not comfortable” and “unhappy” with many of the party’s political positions.

Now, this is no commercial for Jim Webb but you gotta admit he has the bonafides to write on the subject seeing as how he has lived what he wrote about.  Maybe he had likewise wonderins same as me why his whole family acted more like the Braveheart movie than The Brady Bunch.  I can relate.

He is describing my aforementioned great-great here…….

“In such a wild, uncharted place the book of God was vital, for it nourished their spirit and laid boundaries for their conduct. Other subjects simply had no relevance. Trigonometry and calculus would not help them find their way among the mountain trails. Adam Smith’s economics were of no consequence in the matter of planting corn and breeding cattle. Nor did they need the essays of Plato or the plays of Shakespeare to teach them how to shoot a rifle, or to make clothes from animal skins, or to clear away the wilderness with their own bare hands.”

I guess by now you are wonderin’ why I am goin’ on and on so.  It is simple really.  We are the Basket of Deplorables that swept Trump into office. Below the radar, not answerin’ the phone when the pollsters called or giving a sound byte to the local TV station.  Quiet here in flyover country, watching our life expectancy decrease for the first time in 200 years as our skilled blue collar jobs vanished.  Took awhile for the anger to froth over the top but it did and the Clinton folks missed it because they did not even care enough to look.  Understandable since we have been conveniently dismissed for years.

Secretary Clinton is blaming her loss on Comey  4 days now after the election to save face and justify the buttload of money her DNC benefactors forked over to buy the office.  Of course, the MSM is deafly hanging all over her words just like they did during her run up for President.  But it really wasn’t Comey at all that tipped the scales,  it was back in September when she said her ownself, with no help from anybody the ‘deplorable thing.’

Clinton made the remarks at an LGBT for Hillary fundraiser in New York. “You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables.’ Right?” Clinton said. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it.”

She continued: “He  [Trump] has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.”

Let Webb explain it more better……

“In a nutshell, over the decades the national policies of the Republicans had raped the region while the actions of many state and local Democrats too often were designed to preserve the assets of a select few at the expense of just about everyone else.”

“[The Scots-Irish] represent a large, independent swing vote—whose key concerns are seldom passionately represented by either side in any election—rather than a force that affirmatively shapes the national agenda.”

“They have become spoilers because in their view America’s political elites, both Republican and Democrat, have grown together into an almost indiscernible “hybrid royalty” that offers them little to choose from in terms of how the nation is actually being governed.”

I stayed up election night until Trump hit the 270 and finally went to bed with less a load on my shoulders.  We got some breathin’ space on gun control, perhaps the brown tide surging up from the Border will  be staunched a skosh and maybe, just maybe the Military-Industrial Complex won’t get the World War they banked as a sure thing just a day previous.

A deplorable in training called Andy with his Granddaddy

The real world view from my deplorably tacky front porch is we are still a far piece from unicorns on every corner and skittles for one and all being every day doin’s.   Donald Trump would not have been my first choice for Prez;  let’s leave it at that and move forward with honest intent to give him a fair shot.  Ugly reality is the Globalists and Dark State still hold sway over most of the RIS*.  The World Banksters cannot print fiat money and spend their way out of this financial mess.  Printing more money devalues the money already in circulation and that leads to inflation.   Some smart fella is bound to chime in and say US debt is inconsequential when you are the Reserve Currency of the World so the fact our debt is 104% of our GDP is just a number. Mebbe so, but how come what I bought for $1 in 1996 costs $1.54 in 2016?  And how come median household income only increased 4% between 1996 and 2016?  Cipher on the incongruous correlation of those two numbers.  While you are at it, stick this in the back of your mind – the EU GDP to debt ratio is 91%;  that is for all the EU.  Some countries like Greece at 177% and Italy at 133% really screw up their neat little charts.  Oh wait, wait!!!!!  Wanna know who some of the ridiculously low GDP/Debt ratios like 9 or 7 and even 5 belong to??????  Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman are down there in that range.  Makes perfect sense for the United States to send those folks billions of $$ in aid, right? As matter of fact, Saudi Arabia is one of 40 countries the U.S. sends aid to.  You know where those aid dollars come from?  My damn pocket; yours too.  Straight away. BAM!  Stuff like that makes me so mad I could chew nails and spit out a barb wire fence.

Those smart Fed Reserve folks and IMF people say all is A-OK  and they got a handle on it. “Trust us” they say “We are some more smart sumbitches.”  I ain’t buyin’.  2+2 never equals 5 unless it is on some report put out by the GOV.  Mathematics is an irrefutable science; black and white – cut and dried;   and the math’s say it is impossible for this mess to balance out.

“Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion – when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you – when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice – you may know that your society is doomed.

Money is so noble a medium that is does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half-property, half-loot.   Atlas Shrugged – Ayn Rand

This country will not survive  in any form we recognize if the Takers -those who produce nothing-  continue to subjugate the Makers -those whose work produces something-  to a life of increasing poverty and serfdom.  This election focused the Deplorables and I think the strength of their voice and the depth of their anger surprised all of us.

Fer chrissakes, let me give you just one example of how ludicrous this whole suckass charade has become.  Say I wanted to open up a Burger Shack down on the corner – just a good burger, some homemade fries and some sweet tea to drink  – nada mas.  I would have to know, follow and satisfy no less than 200 (two hunnert!!) GOV rules and regulations just to slide that burger on your plate and serve it up to ya.

Trump says “Drain the swamp!”  Mebbe or mebbe not.  Best I am hoping is there is a gaggle of Elitists somewhere that took notice of the bus that hit ’em Tuesday.  Y’all best be payin’ attention.  Just sayin’……….

The 10,000 different ways you can be a victim perplexes me no end. Therapy ponies?? Safety pins?? Do these snowflakes really expect to live an entire lifetime in such artificially sheltered environments? Real life is damn hard and everyone has disappointments and crises to deal with. These kids aren’t going to make it as we know it. What I see of the alternative sucks.

I am tired of tiptoeing around, minimizing my heritage, my masculinity and my lifestyle just to accommodate the groups who are non-starters to begin with.

      NO MORE!

When you consider that both parties had better candidates, Webb is certainly an example of that. Btw, his book ” The Emperor’s General” is a good fictional read.

I saw Webb on one of the news talk shows the other night. He was very well spoken and extremely critical of the way the Democrats are acting post-election.
